The celebration of Novy God (Новый год, i.e. New Year) in Russia has a deep cultural, historical and political dimension behind it.
Before the 16th century in Rus’ (ancient Russia) March was considered as the first month of the year (like in ancient Rome). It is quite symbolic that the exhibition devoted to the International Women’s Day (IWD) was under Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (Rabochiy i Kolkhoznitsa), the landmark Soviet sculpture. Moreover, March 8, 2013, marked 100th anniversary of the first IWD in Russia.
