Ooh look! I ‘ave… Ulyukayev

Aviasales.ru viral marketing ad: literally – One who was in time, didn’t sit down [to sit (down) here means ‘go to jail’]. [Tickets to] London, Munich, Riga, Milan, Prague from 75 euros. Caption says: When you didn’t have time to buy tickets to London.

The Telegraph:

Mr Ulyukayev, 60, is the highest-ranking Russian official to be arrested while in office since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the only serving minister since Lavrenty Beria, Stalin’s feared secret police chief, was detained and shot in a power struggle following the dictator’s death in 1953.

Officers from the Investigative Committee, the country’s top detective agency, and the Federal Security Service, the successor to the KGB, swooped on Mr Ulyukayev at 2:30 AM on Tuesday.

The judge placed Mr Ulyukayev under house arrest and ordered him to wear an electronic tag after officials from the Investigative Committee argued he was a flight risk.

Mr Putin dismissed Mr Ulyukayev in a decree published late on Tuesday, citing “loss of confidence”.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Mr Putin had been informed about the case when the investigation was launched. “These are serious allegations,” Peskov said. “Only a court can deliver a verdict.”

#TheCurrentYear is the year when memes become reality. So after having little cute po-mo Cold War 2.0 with media selling nuclear war fear porn like in the good old days (they didn’t have twitter back then though), I think ’tis the right time for the Great Purge 2.0. Winter 2017 is coming (i.e. 1917 was just a century ago). According to ultraliberals, Putin is literally Stalin and Trump is literally Hitler. History repeats itself on so many levels, doesn’t it?

P.S. On a serious note – I find Mr. Ulyukayev guilty – guilty in writing arguably the cheesiest poem in the history of Russian poetry (in fact,  he wrote plenty of them). I don’t want to waste my time translating it in its entirety. Check out the final lines:

…So that I won’t die completely

Although [my] life just like a hymen

Will be broken one morning.

My verdict: he’s totally lost in poshlost’.

  1. Judging by this and other things I’ve read, Putin is serious about corruption, though it can’t be easy purging all of the left-overs of the Yeltsin era … And Trump is going to have a long and difficult task of purging the neo-cons.

Any ideas?
