Russian Proverbs about Fish & Fishing:

  1. Like a fish in the water. English equivalent: like a duck takes to water.
  2. Fish seek deeper waters, (and) men seek a better place. Рыба ищет, где глубже, (а) человек — где лучше (rýba íschet gde glúbzhe, (a) chelovék — gde lúchshe).
  3. Fish rots from the head. English equivalent: the rot starts at the top.
  4. Neither fish nor meat. English equivalent: neither fish nor flesh.
  5. On a fishing lull, even a crayfish is fish. На безрыбье и рак — рыба (na bezrýb’ye i rak — rýba). English equivalent: better a small fish than an empty dish.
  6. A fisherman sees another fisherman from afar. English equivalent: birds of a feather flock together.
  7. Do not threaten a pike with a sea.
